Driving…and more driving…and more driving

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:24 pm by Strumpet

I’m heading off to Diana’s Grove tonight, so that means:

I’m going to be away from internet access tonight through the middle of Sunday, June 1st.

I won’t have access to my phone after about 2pm tomorrow through 2pm on Saturday May 31st. I will be on the road tonight and most of the day tomorrow (and next Saturday) so feel free to text message me and keep me company on my long trip (4 hours of driving tonight, 8 1/2 hours of driving tomorrow).

ToasterStrumpet’s Own Private Hell

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 pm by Strumpet

I guess it isn’t enough that I’m going to be 29 this year…just one year away from jumping off a cliff.

But no, now I have to live in the dignity-smothering detritus that is crap from my tween years being re-sold to people of “my age group” because it plays on our sense of nostalgia. Yes, I know, it has already been happening for years, but this is the year that I’m going to have to survive the comeback of both NKOTB and 90210. My.F*cking.God.Kill.Me.Now. What’s next, Blossom???

Are there actually people out there who want this crap?

Frustrated Hippie Princess

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:21 pm by Strumpet

I may pretend otherwise, but I am, at heart, a hippie princess.

I started packing today for my week intensive at the Grove. I have 14 outfits that could be classified as “ritual wear” or at the very least “hippie”…and I’m bringing all of them with me. I even have jewelry to go along with most of the outfits.

I’ll know I’m entering the Danger Zone when my hair starts dreading on its own.

Pimpin’: Wild Woman Soaps

If you haven’t already, you need to check out Wild Women Soaps. Their soap scents are heavenly and they lather really well. I just finished a Lakshmi bar and up next is a Gaia bar; waiting in the wings are the following:

Isis
Kwan Yin
Persephone

I think I’m going to have to join their soap of the month club, a temptation that I’ve been resisting only by using all of my willpower.

I like to move it move it.

Bellydance. I love it, and I hate it.

Love:
- doing the movements
- using my muscles
- the music
- having to work on balance and control (two things that I have a lot of difficulty with, partially because of scoliosis)

Hate:
- not being able to do arm and foot movements along with hip or chest movements- I have to focus so much on doing the movement in my torso that I frequently lose sight of what I’m supposed to be doing with my arms and feet…and it doesn’t seem like anyone else is having that trouble
- feeling like the only person in the room who hasn’t studied ballet, tap, jazz or some other sort of bodywork- I feel like the only person who hasn’t been in dance classes for years
- feeling like a total klutz
- having to work on balance and control (No, really, I *can’t* move my hip evenly to the left like I can move it to the right. And I really *can’t* stand on my tiptoes for long periods of time without falling over)

I am really enjoying the class in spite of all of that, though.

Oooh, I am so tired and sore. I think I’m getting sick (which explains the constant sleepiness) but the sore is from my Monday bellydance class. Muscles that I never use (who lifts and drops their sternum on a regular basis?) are aching, and others that I should use more (biceps, triceps, abs) are also whining.

I’ve concluded that I need to get in better shape- I shouldn’t feel like death from one bellydance class. I’m going to buy some weights this weekend, and I’ve found this website which should be a pretty decent guide to doing lifting at home. I’m also going to be continuing bellydance classes on Mondays and also on Thursdays with titania_le_fey.

Right now, though? I want to curl up into a warm ball of blankets and nap.

Good Things

Posted in Gratitude at 9:43 am by Strumpet

- witnessing my friends as they grow and explore
- witnessing the same in myself
- realizing that “doing it afraid” is more worthwhile to me than being fearless
- Porky, the Great Warrior/Serial Killer (she has demolished her stuffed monkey, stuffed elephant, and is slowly pulling the legs off of her stuffed Piggu one by one as she thrashes about, throwing him in the air and growling). People who think Yorkies are princess dogs are dead wrong- they are Ferocious Beasts.
- my hair, which has hit a length that I actually like- and I can use cute scarf accessories in it now (Liz, you were right!)

Jesus Made Me Puke: Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right

Posted in Humor, Spirituality at 11:21 am by Strumpet

Jon found this via creatrixx, and now I’m sharing it with you.

American Christians who speak in tongues basically all try to sound like extras from the underworld set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. If you want to pull it off and sound like a natural, just imagine you’re holding a rubber replica of Harrison Ford’s heart in your hands: Umm-harakashaka! Loo-pa-wanneee-rakakakasha, Meester Jones!

I can only read Feministing once a week; it takes too much of a toll on my blood pressure.

College student sexually assaulted as crowd cheers (This made me want to puke.)

Two years and a lawsuit later, CA man gets his wife’s last name (My favorite part? The 2004 PA court decision that it is in the “best interests of the child” to only have her father’s last name. What the fuck decade is this, people???)

American Life League launches anti-birth control campaign (I’m not shocked, but I figured I’d report it anyways, just in case any of you out there think that birth control is something that *everyone* thinks is a good idea in our, ahem, enlightened era.)

SML

Our trip to Smith Mountain Lake, VA was a great success.

Porky (who now has the nickname Piglet, courtesy of Debbie) was really great on both 8-hour drives; she didn’t whine or fuss in any way. She also got along well with Maggie, Jon’s father’s enormous doberman. Cutest moment of the trip? The two of them, on the floor, playing together, Maggie lying on her back with her head on the floor so she could be as close to Porky’s level as possible.

Seeing the Lizzard was great, as always. Being on the lake was great, as always- the weather forecast was menacing, but we had sunny skies every day. The weekend, the company, everything was very chill and relaxing, which I needed.

We’re going back for the 4th of July, and I need to find a good canoe to bring to the lake…this is my mission…
